Gyms across Kochi are full at 6 am and again at 7 pm, and most people in them are eating around their workouts by guesswork. The rules are simpler than supplement shops make them sound: carbs before training give you energy, protein after training repairs muscle, and your total daily protein matters more than any single shake.
Before a workout
The goal is easy-to-digest carbohydrate with a little protein, 60–90 minutes before training. Big, fatty or very high-fibre meals sit in the stomach and slow you down.
- 1 banana and a handful of peanuts
- 2 idlis with a little chutney
- 1 slice of bread with peanut butter
- Small bowl of oats with milk
- A glass of milk with a date, if training within 30 minutes
Early-morning training on an empty stomach is fine for light sessions. For heavy lifting or long cardio, a banana or a few dates on the way to the gym makes a real difference.
After a workout
Within about two hours, eat a meal with 25–40 g of protein and some carbohydrate. If the next main meal is coming soon anyway, you do not need a separate snack.
| Post-workout option | Protein (approx.) |
|---|---|
| 3 whole eggs + 2 chapatis | 26 g |
| 150 g grilled chicken + 1 cup rice | 40 g |
| 200 g curd + 1 cup rice + dal | 22 g |
| 100 g paneer bhurji + 2 rotis | 24 g |
| Fish curry (150 g fish) + rice | 30 g |
| Whey protein scoop in milk (if you use one) | 30 g |
| 1 cup cooked chana + curd | 20 g |
How much protein in a day?
For someone training 3–5 times a week: 1.6–2 g per kg of body weight. A 70 kg person needs 110–140 g a day, spread across 4–5 meals. Most Indian diets provide 50–60 g, which is why progress stalls. Adding eggs at breakfast, a dal or chicken portion at lunch, and curd or paneer at dinner closes most of the gap without supplements.
Fat loss vs muscle gain
- Losing fat: keep protein high, cut carbs mainly from snacks and dinner, and keep the pre-workout carb. Total calories slightly below maintenance.
- Gaining muscle: same protein, more rice and roti around training, and 300–500 kcal above maintenance.
Hydration and the Kochi heat
Sweat losses in our climate are large. Drink 500 ml of water in the hour before training, sip during, and add a pinch of salt and a squeeze of lemon to water after long sessions. Thirst is a late signal.
