Calorie apps are built around sandwiches and pasta. Type "avial" or "meen curry" and you get a guess at best. This chart gives realistic calorie ranges for the Kerala dishes most of us eat every week, so you can plan a day without weighing everything.
All figures are approximate for a typical home-style serving. Restaurant versions usually use more oil and coconut, so add 20–30 percent when eating out.

What this means for a normal day
A lunch of one cup of matta rice, fish curry, a thoran and moru curry comes to about 500–550 kcal and is a balanced plate. The same lunch with two cups of rice and beef fry is closer to 1,000 kcal. The ingredients did not change much. The portion did.
Five easy ways to cut calories from Kerala food
- Serve rice in a cup, not a ladle. One cup for weight loss, one and a half for maintenance.
- Choose curry over fry for fish and chicken on weekdays.
- Fill half the plate with thoran, avial, salad or cucumber before the rice goes on.
- Switch from sweet chai to black tea or tea with less sugar. Four cups a day is 300 kcal.
- Keep biryani and parotta for the weekend, and halve the rice portion when you do have them.
