PCOS Diet Plan: Indian Foods That Help and Foods to Limit

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects roughly one in five Indian women of reproductive age. Irregular periods, weight gain around the waist, acne and hair changes are the visible signs. Underneath, the most common driver is insulin resistance: the body makes more insulin than it should, and that excess pushes the hormonal imbalance further. This is why diet matters so much. Food that keeps insulin steady eases symptoms; food that spikes it does the opposite.

This article is general guidance. PCOS is a medical condition, so work with your gynaecologist and a dietitian, especially if you are on medication or trying to conceive.

The principles behind a PCOS diet

  1. Slow carbohydrates, not no carbohydrates. Whole grains, millets and legumes release sugar slowly. White rice, maida and sugar do not.
  2. Protein at every meal. Eggs, fish, chicken, paneer, dal and curd blunt the insulin response and keep you full.
  3. Fibre, lots of it. Vegetables, fruit with skin, whole dal and seeds.
  4. Healthy fats. Nuts, seeds, coconut in moderation, fish.
  5. Regular meal timing. Long gaps followed by big meals are the pattern to avoid.

Indian foods that help

  • Millets: ragi, bajra, jowar as dosa, roti or porridge
  • Brown rice or matta rice in measured portions
  • All dals, chana, rajma, green gram
  • Eggs, fish (especially sardines and mackerel), chicken
  • Paneer, curd, buttermilk
  • Leafy greens, beans, cabbage, cauliflower, bitter gourd, drumstick
  • Guava, papaya, apple, berries, orange
  • Flaxseed, methi (fenugreek) seeds, almonds, walnuts
  • Cinnamon and turmeric in cooking

Foods to limit

  • Sugar, sweets, payasam, sweetened chai and coffee
  • Maida products: parotta, white bread, bakery items, instant noodles
  • Large portions of white rice, especially at dinner
  • Fruit juices, packaged drinks, flavoured milk
  • Deep-fried snacks
  • Full-fat dairy in large quantities if it worsens acne for you

Beyond food

Thirty minutes of brisk walking or strength training most days improves insulin sensitivity as much as many dietary changes. Sleep matters too: poor sleep raises insulin and hunger the next day. Even a 5 percent weight loss has been shown to improve cycle regularity in many women with PCOS, so small steady progress counts.

Help with the daily meals

Many women with PCOS tell us the hard part is not knowing what to eat, it is making it happen on a working day. Pro Calories can build a PCOS-friendly plan around your preferences through a diet consultation in Kochi, and deliver the meals across the city on a custom plan.
