Keto Diet for Beginners: An Indian Guide with Kerala Food Ideas

The ketogenic (keto) diet is one of the most searched diets in India, and one of the most misunderstood. It isn't "eat unlimited meat and cheese", and it isn't right for everyone. This beginner's guide explains how keto works and how to follow it with Indian and Kerala food.

What is the keto diet?

Keto is a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet with moderate protein. Most keto plans keep carbohydrates to roughly 20 to 50 grams a day. For comparison, a single cup of cooked rice has around 45 grams. With so little carbohydrate available, the body shifts to burning fat and produces ketones as an alternative fuel. This state is called ketosis.

Many people lose weight on keto, mainly because protein and fat are filling and cutting out rice, bread and sugar removes a lot of calories.

Who should avoid keto, or check with a doctor first

  • People with type 1 diabetes, or type 2 diabetes treated with insulin or other glucose-lowering medicines, because doses may need adjusting.
  • Anyone with kidney, liver or pancreatic disease, or a history of gallbladder problems.
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Anyone with a history of eating disorders.

If you have a medical condition or take regular medication, talk to your doctor before starting.

Keto-friendly Indian and Kerala foods

  • Fish and seafood: mathi (sardine), ayala (mackerel), neymeen (seer fish) and prawns. Kerala fish curry with kudampuli fits keto well.
  • Eggs, chicken and meat, grilled, roasted or curried.
  • Paneer, full-fat curd and cheese.
  • Coconut in all its forms: grated coconut, coconut oil and coconut milk, in sensible amounts.
  • Low-carb vegetables: cabbage, cauliflower, beans, spinach and other greens, cucumber, ladies' finger, capsicum and mushrooms.
  • Nuts and seeds: almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and chia, in small portions.
  • Fats: ghee, butter, olive oil and coconut oil.

Foods to avoid on keto

  • Rice and everything made from it: puttu, appam, idli, dosa and idiyappam
  • Wheat: chapati, parotta and bread
  • Kappa (tapioca), potatoes and other starchy tubers
  • Banana, plantain and most fruits, apart from small portions of berries
  • Sugar, jaggery, honey, sweets and sweetened drinks
  • Large portions of dal, chana and beans, which are healthy but fairly high in carbohydrate

  • Dinner: pepper chicken with sautéed beans and a green salad

The first week: "keto flu"

In the first few days many people feel tired, headachy or irritable while the body adapts. It usually passes within a week. To ease it:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Don't under-salt your food, because you lose more sodium in the early days.
  • Eat leafy greens and other potassium-rich vegetables.
  • Sleep well and keep exercise light until you adapt.

Is keto sustainable?

That depends on you. Some people thrive on keto; others find it too restrictive to keep up. Choose mostly unsaturated fats (fish, nuts, olive oil), keep processed meats to a minimum, and eat plenty of vegetables for fibre. If strict keto feels like too much, a moderate low-carb approach can still help with weight and blood sugar.

Keto without the planning

Counting carbohydrates in every meal is the hardest part of keto. The Pro Calories keto plan delivers ready-made keto meals across Kochi, built around the foods above.

Frequently asked questions

Can vegetarians follow keto?

Yes, though it takes more planning. Build meals around paneer, tofu, eggs if you eat them, curd, nuts, seeds, coconut and low-carb vegetables.

How long does it take to get into ketosis?

Usually a few days of eating very few carbohydrates, though it varies from person to person.

Is coconut allowed on keto?

Yes. Coconut, coconut oil and coconut milk are low in carbohydrate and a natural fit for Kerala-style keto cooking. They are also high in calories, so watch the portions.
